Richard Hoover began building guitars and carved-top mandolins in 1972. By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. It was and is Richard's intent to translate his skills and sensitivities as an individual builder to an exceptional team of craftspeople, each of whom could become an expert in their specialty. Richard's style of allowing his craftspeople to interpret his vision has propelled Santa Cruz Guitar Company to the forefront of modern guitar making.

Santa Cruz D-12 Fret- This 12 fret dreadnought with slotted headstock was commissioned to showcase Norman Blake’s playing style by adding clarity and sustain for an articulate response to the flat pick. Building a guitar with 12 frets clear of the body creates more air volume, which allows greater amplitude and sustain. The hand tuned X-bracing insures increased bass response, while the top voicing and 4-1/4 inch sound hole size combine to achieve great presence in all ranges. Features Mahogany back and sides, Sitka Spruce top and scalloped braces, Ebony fretboard/ bridge & overlay, herringbone purfling and rosette, Tortoise pickguard, 1 3/4” nut width and 25.375” scale. H-13 Custom 42 Brazilian- This beauty has some of the nicest Brazilian Rosewood bookmatched back and sides we’ve ever seen from Santa Cruz. Made by Richard Hoover for the 2008 Summer NAMM show, the wood has papers documenting it was cut down in the mid 1930’s and does not break any preservation treaty for this rare species. Paired with a highly bearclawed Italian Alpine Spruce Top with 42 style Green Heart Abalone purfling and rosette, Abalone torch SCGC headstock inlay on Ebony, pyramid stle Ebony Bridge, Waverly Tuners with ivoroid buttons, and Richard glued this guitar with hot hide glue. Santa Cruz 1934 D Mahogany- In 1934, the powerful 14-fret herringbone dreadnought was unleashed. This has become one of the most revered and sought after designs of the steel string acoustic guitar. The secret to the often superior tone of vintage instruments lies in aged woods (crystallized resins) and the relaxation of tensions built-in during manufacture. This is exactly what Santa Cruz accounts for in the 1934 D Model. Old Growth Mahogany cut in the 1930's, Adirondack Spruce top and bracing from the same era and real hot hide glue, that sets glass-like and resonant, give us the foundation for an authentic vintage sound. This isn't 'like the old stuff.' It is the old stuff. Other features include Ebony fretboard and bridge, Vintage Varnish Tint, Waverly Nickel tuners, enlarged soundhole, herringbone purfling, full Ivoroid binding, Abalone SCGC logo at 16th fret, Dalmation pickguard, vintage style Ivoroid rosette, 1 11/16” nut, 25.25” scale.
